I applied this not as thick as some instructed and stop processing after 25 mins because my hair lightens naturally very wuickly in the sun...I cant get over how great it looks!

I was so scared to use this, only because you hear awful stories of bleach jobs on hair. I always went to the salon to get highlights but of course they are closed. I tried it and my hair came out great! Just take your time when applying.

This kit was really nice. A little harder to use than I thought but was very Happy with the results.
I tried the highlight kit after watching training video and got professional looking results. I don’t think I will ever go back to salon for highlights again.

I recently applied highlights to my hair. Followed instructions to the letter as I was nervous.
Hair highlights on medium brown hair turned out an intense orange yellow color even with the toner. I am reaching out for some help in correcting this. May have to wear a scarve!

My results weren't what I was hoping for, but I think it had more to do with my technique than the product itself. I should have been watching the lightening process more closely instead of waiting the full 30 minutes.
The customer service was top notch though! I was a little panicky, but they offered to send a colouring kit to fix the problem free of charge.
I was very happy and appreciative that they don't leave you high and dry!

Had a friend help me, I had lighter and darker sections,...but worked with a colourist on here, and they came up with a solution, that I am looking forward to trying.

I tried to follow the videos and instructions to the letter, but what they should tell you is that the first section you do you should check before the time is up. Since this was my first time doing anything like this it probably took longer for me than the person in the video so I ended up having one blond/orange streak on the side of my head that looked terrible. I will say that eSalon's customer service is excellent and I told them about it and sent pics and they found a solution quickly.
Another idea would be for the person in the video that is doing the lightening to show us the results after she has rinsed and dried and styled her hair so we know what to expect.
Also, I don't know if it was the shampoo or the toner that smelled so good but one of them made me smell my hair for days. The smell was to die for!

Been so happy with my base color kit I receive monthly, and used it for almost two years now. I am a dark blond and thought I would lighten up since my color started to look dark. I ended up with a bleached blond look with a lot of orange tones despite following the directions, watching the video, and using the toner mask. Unless you are skilled at applying the right amount of product, and able to wield the brush with skill, then, this kit is too light! You will be risking more of a bleached effect, and not the natural highlights you are looking for. They should consider reworking the formula so that you can apply highlights in a more "goof proof" way, and also tone down the bleach so you are not risking lightening up, too, much. :(. Of course the customer service is helpful, and they will send me a demi-permanent kit, but personally, I would not try this kit unless you have had success with performing your own highlights in the past.

Great Highlights! Easy on hair, feels healthy afterwards. My Complaint..for the price, it should come with a highlighting cap & hook
Very nice highlight kit. Product really thick little difficult to work with but managed. Video shows long hair example have to adj for short hair. Always a little apprehensive working with a lightening agent but it came out fine.

I got my sister to apply this for me as I was unconvinced i'd be able to take small sections myself at the back.
We left a halo of un dyed hair to ensure it grows out well.
On top of colouring its quite a time consuming process so I won't be doing it regularly!

Amazing quality, super helpful instructions and video, easy to use, perfect result. There is a small But - i’ve got a lot of hair and it was not enough with one pack. I’ve managed to scrape last bits and pieces, but should be considered when you order. Next time will get 2 boxes.
So I colored my hair on Saturday and I was very hesitant to do the highlights. But I did on Sunday. It was pretty simple but I saw my first strips becoming very blonde and I got scared so 15 minutes after my last strip I washed it off. So glad I did because the first strip was very blonde. But all in all I love the color.

As I have short layered hair I don’t find this easy to do myself. But I didn’t make a bad job of it in the end. It certainly gives your hair colour a lift and the highlights blended well. Left my hair in great condition Will probably only use this product occasionally not every time I colour my roots.

Help! I only developed my hair for 25 minutes and it lightened so much it is now bright orange when my hair is near black. I did use the toner mask as well and it is so brassy. I don’t think I would ever order the highlight kit again after this.

I purchased this set thinking that I could get blonde highlights (even though my hair is DARK). WELL, the first strand I completed turned blonde while the rest was orange/copper and very shimmery under a fluorescent light. I’m not sure how much time was between starting with my first strand to ending with my last strand, but I did add an extra 5 minutes to the 30 min recommendation. There is also enough product for JUST highlights…
I definitely didn’t know what I was doing so my recommendations are:
1. Don’t lie about what your current hair color is
2. Have someone help you
3. Follow the directions (separate sections AND balayage instructions)
4. MAKE SURE TO WRING OUT HAIR when putting on toning mask (as to not dilute the solution; perhaps get another bottle)
5. Not recommended for all-over color substitution nor short hair (pixie cuts)

I have VERY dark brown hair and have been using a dark hair colour from esalon for years very confidently. I decided to try the light set for dark brunette and followed the instructions to the letter only to be left with brassy orange highlights. I wish I had checked how the colour was changing rather than trust that 35 minutes was the correct timings. I see from other reviews that others have done this successfully. Esalon are sending me a semi permanent colour to correct it but I am not kidding when I say I cannot leave the house looking like this and it could take five to seven days to arrive. I just recommend you be very cautious with your timings to avoid being left in this predicament.

I can tell this is a good bleach set, I have worked with a few however there just isn’t enough product in this set for people with long/thick hair. I followed the directions and hardly had enough to saturate the whole strand by the time I got to the top layer of hair. I did really love the shampoo and toner. They smelled really nice

Even after using the toning mask for the maximum amount of time, the highlights are not the right lightness, but rather orange-ish. I am now in a panic to re-dye my hair all back to my normal brown to get rid of the "highlights", but not sure how long I should wait to do it.
UPDATE>>Jasmine and, I am sure, the whole esalon team, are very knowledgeable and helpful. Jasmine responded to my concerns and advised what steps to take and now I am loving how the highlights are progressing! Every year, I'd go to the salon just once to have my hair lightened/balayage. I live in Los Angeles, so salons can be quite expensive. Often they don't even have someone who does this treatment, or the waiting list is 2+ months. After tax and tip (and usually 5 hours), I'm out about $350. The last time I really paid attention to what the girl was doing, a combination of teasing + dry brushing upwards + foil. I went into this with little faith that I could do it at home... welp, I'll never be paying a salon again. My results were actually BETTER than the last time I paid a salon (when I tried Madison Reed, and the lady gave me horrid results that had a hard line stopping the color between light/dark). So long story short, this kit was the best surprise. I'm so glad I tried it and did my own Balayage.
I enjoyed having highlights but I did find putting them in alone a bit fiddly and my arms ached, also I was a bit heavy handed and the result was a little lumpen😔
I will do it again this summer because practice makes perfect.
I had to try a few different techniques to find what worked best for me but what I love about this lightener most is that there is absolutely no damage to my hair or smell in my house when I am applying it
I am trying to remove the light toner & just keep the color kit. I do not need it & I probably have 6 kits for the light toner. So, please remove this kit!
Because my hair got so dark from the other set instead of making highlights I decided to put it on all of my hair except 1 cm from scull. It was quite hart to cover equally everything and I made some mistakes, but the final color is nice. Huge plus for great hair mask after.
If I was going to make highlights with it I would not be sure how to cover the back of my short hair.
I don’t think the instructions for applications were very clear. The result was chunkier highlights than I wanted in some areas and the ends didn’t take the highlights well. Still was happy with the result but will apply differently next time
Okay, so I had another look at my hair and I thought it was decent. I need to work on how I sweep upwards, but also be sure to saturate strands and alternate from side to side. If you have thick, southeast Asian dark brown hair like mine, start with 30min first. I did and found I could probably go to 35min next time, but also I need to be more precise with my painting on the strands. I have to say I’m not the most coordinated person as well, so if I can do it, you can. Btw, I would suggest giving it a couple of his before giving up. The next day, I felt it blended decently and the next time around, it will look even better. Just wanted to update that it looks really nice this time around. Again, needed a couple of adjustments, but will never go back to an expensive salon again.

I am very DIFFICULT to color, especially when lightening. I haven't had a stylist yet who has listened to me and hasn't had to color correct several times when coloring my hair. My hair is fine and SOAKS up color like a sponge, whether light or dark. I missed my stylist appointment and ordered a kit from Madison Reed to "gently multidimensionally lighten" my dark brown dull hair and it turned it BLACK and I took it off TEN minutes early!!!! I was horrified. They refunded my money after seeing pictures. I was so upset. I don't have time to wait and have an event coming up so I figured it was already messed up, so I'd try gentle highlights.
I was more generous in the distribution then the video showed (added more highlights), because my hair is SO dark, but I only left processing time for 12 minutes instead of the recommended 35 (I was afraid due to my history), I should have left it on a little longer (maybe 5 minutes), however I am VERY pleased with how it turned out. They look professional: gentle, caramel brown highlights that turn mahogany in the sun. Subtle and adds beautiful dimension! my hair no longer looks black and it looks like I had it styled. Very natural. THANKS AGAIN!
Would be nice to have a video for senior women who have thinning hair. Using my own hair to experiment was scary. Turned out okay… Will know better if I do again. Not everyone has hair like your models 🙂

Really liked the results. It is easier than the more general coloring process (the two bottle roots and ends or the roots alone) but I still need a bit of practice on my technique. I took too long with the "horseshoe" and top "bun" so the very first two small sections i did came out too light vs the rest. Not a biggie-- I can tuck them behind my ears.

Love your product but some of the gray roots show through when my hair dries. I have soft black mix but the roots turn auburn. I noticed it says roots but highlights.Maybe that's the problem Why would I want my roots lighter? Also the coverage lasts 2 weeks.Did you change something? And gives me a Auburn color.

It's a normal bleach kit it bleaches your hair out if you're not careful it'll fry it if you leave it on too long especially if you already have color treated damaged hair to begin with so be careful but I mean it does its job I wish they had something more along the lines of biosilk products that you can not have to worry about that I love bio silk and I wish that you guys sold that but anyways it's it's still just a regular bleach kit works fine

Great product but unfortunately all their instructions are written for long hair. If you have short hair you have to figure it out for yourself.

I began applying this during the first lockdown when I suddenly had more time & felt like experimenting. After eighteen months of use my hairdresser has said the lights have caused damage to my hair. BUT I love the look and so after a good cut have reapplied :).
However, all color needs to be left on for 3-4 times longer than recommended in the directions. When I used to go to the salon, they put me under the hair dryer at the salon during my color and highlights and it still takes at least twice as long as most of their clients.

My First Time Trying Home Balayage and it was So EASY

I spent $250 on bad salon cut and color and vowed never again. I thought I couldn't do much worse at home. It was worth a shot to try.
I got the light blonde Light Set and started the process as soon as it arrived at my door. I watched a bunch of how-tos on youtube and in the end I give myself a B+ for my inaugural effort.
Like some other first-timers, the top of my head is a little blotchy. My side part made that final sectioning a little tricky. Next time I'll pull further from the part before adding the color, and really make sure I do a very sharp angle with the product.
Overall the Light Set far exceeded my expectations. I've sent photos of my color to everyone I know and they're blown away. They can't believe I did it myself.

The first color wasn't exactly what I wanted. Esalon adjusted my formula so the next colour batch was more what I was hoping for. I have already recommended eSalon to friends.

I'm south Asian with Dark brown hair and have been desperate for highlights for over a year. I didn't want to pay ridiculous amounts to go to a salon and was ecstatic when I came across this. I got my sister to brush them on as I wear glasses and can't see without them, and she found the process very straightforward. The only negative is that the smell of the mixture is quite strong and It triggered a migraine which I had for the rest of the day. Nonetheless, when I washed it out, I couldn't contain my excitement at seeing dark blonde highlights. The toning was straightforward and I couldn't stop smiling everytime I looked in the mirror.
I added highlights to blend with the highlights in my extensions. At first they did not seem like light enough but when I went out in the sun after a few days, they looked beautiful. I definitely would take smaller pieces to highlight so it looked a little more less chunky but that was on me.

Shade is perfect however the color fades rather quickly and because my hair is so fine and I only wash it once a week it fades rather quickly.

Thought I’d be adventurous and try balayage. Okay you can probably tell it was not done by a professional but I’m still happy with the product and the instructions were clear. My execution can be improved but will stick with it.
The only reason i cant give them the full 5 stars is that the timing on the directions is way off. I leave this on for 8 to 10 minutes and have distinct highlights. The color or the highlights us beautiful and my hair isnt damaged.

This kit is designed and setup so I can add highlights to my hair color but I can't see the highlights. The system is easy to follow but I think the color needs to change, maybe.

I’ve been using this product for a few years and it’s easy to do, takes about an hour. It barely lasts 4 weeks as I do have quite a bit of gray to cover. Wish it lasted a good 6 weeks. I use the color wash and camo spray for my part and temples to extend color coverage when I don’t have time to color.

I’ve had professional blonde balayage highlights on my light/medium brown base for ages. Due to COVID, I haven’t been to the salon in almost a year! So I decided to just do a drugstore box dye in “chestnut brown” about a month ago to cover greys. It ended up turning my hair a very very dark reddish brown. The color was also flat and kind of blah. I decided to attempt at-home balayage with Light Set in medium/dark blonde, knowing the highlights would likely turn out more on the caramel/auburn side, which I was fine with. After watching the how-to videos on the site and several YouTube tutorials, along with the written step-by-step eSalon provided, I felt pretty confident applying the bleach even as an amateur. The results are absolutely spot on! I love the depth and dimension Light Set provided. And my hair feels even healthier than before which is amazing and unexpected! Would definitely recommend for those wanting to take on diy highlights at home and will use again for sure!

This was the first time I've ever used the light set. I found the application process more difficult than expected. The videos that illustrate it make it look simple, but I have curly hair and applying the highlighting mixture to thin strips of my clean hair (no styling products to keep it in check!) was a real challenge. Also, I found that the size of the strips needs to be wider on my curly hair: for application instructions to be truly personalised, they should take into consideration hair texture! Having said this, I'm delighted with the overall result.
